The "Paper of the Month" has been awarded at the Department of Veterinary Medicine since February 2023. Particularly good scientific publications are highlighted here every month.

"This is our way of promoting young researchers and recognising, appreciating and highlighting the achievements of our research colleagues in the field of veterinary medicine," emphasises Prof. Dr Marcus Fulde, Vice Dean for Research, who initiated this project.

Thanks to the support of the Society of Friends and Sponsors of Veterinary Medicine at Freie Universität Berlin e.V., the Paper of the Month can be honoured with 50 euros.

  • The applicant is a member of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the time of application

  • The doctorate (if applicable) was awarded no more than 5 years ago

  • The applicant is the first or last author of the proposed publication and/or is listed as "corresponding author". If the applicant assumes this authorship in the form of shared authorship, only the applicant must be a faculty member

  • The article must be relevant to the field of veterinary medicine

  • Indication of the journal's impact factor (last available information according to ISI)

  • At the time of application, the publication must not be older than six weeks. The date of publication is the public availability (online and/or print) of the article, but not an 'advanced publication' of the author's manuscript accepted for publication. The proposed publication can participate in three rounds of the Paper of the Month selection process after submission.

To apply for the PoM, the applicant must submit the following documents

  • A picture of the applicant or the working group (preferred). Alternatively: a meaningful scientific image in the context of the publication.

(If no picture is available, please contact the public relations team at pr@vetmed.fu-berlin.de and arrange a photo appointment)

  • A short prose text (maximum 200 words) in which

      • the status of the research (before the start of the published study/investigation)

      • new, additional findings (increase in knowledge documented by the publication)

      • the significance of the publication in context (presentation of the overall knowledge now available through prior knowledge and publication for future research, medical practice or scientific principles)

    is shown.

The Department's Public Relations team reserves the right to modify this text before publication  if necessary without consulting the applicant.

Positive submissions will be published on the department's website by the Public Relations team.

Applications for the PoM must be submitted by email to pr@vetmed.fu-berlin.de by the 1st of the previous month. The proposed publication can participate in three rounds of the PoM selection process from the time of submission.

A prize of 50 euros will be awarded to the submitting author. The winner will also receive a certificate.

The selection is made by the elected Faculty Council. Each member of the Faculty Council has one vote; the winner is determined by a simple majority of votes.

The elected Dean of Research chairs the selection committee.

The evaluation is based on

  • the professional relevance for the subject "Veterinary Medicine"

  • the excellence of the work (measured, for example  but not exclusively  on the basis of the journal impact factor or the outreach of the manuscript (metrics))

In the selection process, attention should be paid to a possible equal distribution between clinical, applied and basic scientific work.
