Prevalence of MRSA in canine and feline clinical samples from one-third of veterinary practices in Germany from 2019–2021

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is an urgent global public health crisis that has far-reaching implications for healthcare, veterinary, and agriculture industries, making it an One Health concern. One main contributor to deaths attributable to AMR is Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The WHO calls for AMR surveillance to strengthen the knowledge base, but AMR data for companion animals is still lacking. Data on MRSA rates in clinical samples is still scarce and highly selective, showing the need to address this with large-scale laboratory data. With our study we are the first to comprehensively assess and publish MRSA data on companion animals with samples collected from 33.1 % of veterinary practices across Germany. Our analysis covered various sample types, culminating in a total of 175 171 samples, containing 5 526 S. aureus isolates, from clinically diseased cats and dogs. The MRSA prevalence in companion animals was found to be 17.8 % and therefore significantly higher than the 5.4 % reported in human medicine. Our work furthermore demonstrates the viability of utilizing large-scale laboratory data for monitoring AMR and provides a basis continuous AMR surveillance in pets. To our knowledge, this represents the worldwide largest analysis of the occurrence of MRSA in companion animals to date.
