Prof. Dr. Sonja Bröer has been Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the School of Veterinary Medicine since 2020. Her research focuses on neuroscience, particularly research into the mechanisms that contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as epilepsy.

“As a mentor, I would like to support students and doctoral candidates in their further career choices and open their eyes to their own strengths and the possible career prospects that open up after such a difficult, scientifically demanding and yet thematically very broad-based course of study such as veterinary medicine,” emphasizes Sonja Bröer.

The professor is being honored above all for her commitment to making a rather dry subject, such as pharmaceutical law, appealing to her students with practice-oriented teaching and application-oriented case studies, launching new events on career entry such as "Karrierewege in der Pharmakologie" (career paths in pharmacology) and providing students with helpful career tips and contacts to potential employers and fields of activity.

Award ceremony in a festive setting

On December 20, the official award ceremony was held by Manfred Baldschus (founder of the UNICUM Foundation and jury member), Prof. Günter M. Ziegler (President of Freie Universität Berlin) and Prof. Uwe Rösler (Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine). The award was presented during a traditional Christmas drink hosted by the Dean's Office. In addition to numerous colleagues from the department and the university management of Freie Universität, it was above all the students who wanted to personally congratulate their Professor of the Year on this evening.
