Research Day with a focus on science communication
News from Dec 17, 2024
As is tradition, this year's Research Day at our faculty began at the start of December with a presentation of the publication and third-party funding statistics by the Dean of Research, Prof. Marcus Fulde. He thanked everyone who contributed to the positive development of the statistics in the past year. Further thanks went to Dr. Tobias Ripp, head of the library, who carried out the evaluations and created the diagrams.
A break with coffee and biscuits invited the participants to discuss the many data, relations and bar charts before the second part of the event, which included lectures and discussions on the topic of science communication. After a short thematic introduction, Christine Boldt and Friederike Grasse from the Communications and Marketing Office of Freie Universität presented possibilities, channels and examples of science communication at the FU. Nataliia Sokolovska, project coordinator and research program manager at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society, then gave a talk on the topic of hostility towards science and presented a study on capacities and competencies in dealing with hate speech and hostility towards science.
Finally, Christine Boldt and Friederike Grasse shed light on support services for scientists in the face of hate speech and digital violence, with a focus on the Scicomm support, which has been providing support and advice to scientists and science communicators in the face of attacks and unobjective conflicts in science communication for 1.5 years.
