Telepathology: Introduction

The Institute of Pathology of the School of Veterinary Medicine recently became the first medical educational institution in Germany to have a "ScanScope" (Aperio) at its disposal. The device enables the complete digitization of histological specimens at very high resolution (400x) and works in principle like an ordinary scanner, only in completely different dimensions. The result is a digital histological preparation that can be viewed on the computer under a microscope, just like a glass slide. The computer thus replaces the microscope as a "virtual microscope". This technology makes it possible to work with digitized histological preparations over long distances without a microscope. Conferences with several participants are also possible. This key technology opens up access to many other possibilities, such as digital annotations and descriptions in the specimen (annotations) or possible image analyses.

The department uses Zoomify Enterprise to view the images on the computer. The image display is integrated into the Internet browser used. The advantages are that there is no need for additional software installations on the computer used and the reduced need for data transport, which is particularly important when using modem and ISDN connections. From a didactic point of view, the ability to display annotations is a major added value.

Note on the use of digital slides:

Depending on the size of the screen or the resolution used, the displayable image section varies (which can mean that if several annotations are displayed in one section, some of them may move to the edge of the image). For the most efficient use of screen space, we recommend using full screen mode.
Please note that changing the window size ("maximize" or "minimize") as well as switching to full screen mode or back to the normal view leads to a new page layout (starting position with slide overview). Any enlarged sections that have already been set will therefore be lost! Therefore, always select the desired display first and then "microscope".

Tip: Press the "F11" key to switch to or from full screen mode!

The histological course preparations are available as a Blackboard course "Pathological-histological preparations" (Blackboard login).

A selection of digital specimens can be found in the "Digital specimens" gallery.
