Study and teaching

The Institute of Animal Nutrition teaches students practical aspects of animal nutrition. We endeavor to work as interactively as possible and with case studies. The spectrum covers issues relating to the basics of nutrition, its application and its effects on animal health, food quality and the environment.

The Institute of Animal Nutrition offers "Exercises in Animal Nutrition" and the lecture botany of forage plants in the summer semester and lectures and "Exercises in Animal Nutrition" in the winter semester, which includes practical exercises for the lectures (general animal nutrition, special animal nutrition). We also offer elective courses in animal nutrition and enable students to work in small groups on practical issues in animal husbandry and the laboratory.

Equine Science teaching takes place in the summer and is divided into lectures on the topics of equine nutrition, feed science and the botany of forage plants.

The course of study is largely determined by the Ordinance on the Licensing of Veterinarians (Federal Law Gazette 1999 Part I No. 50). According to this, the subject area of feed science is assigned to the 1st and 2nd year of study and the subject area of animal nutrition to the 3rd to 5th year of study.

  • 4th semester: Exercises in feed science (group lessons, 2 SWS). This course requires a certificate, i.e. proof of regular and successful participation must be provided. Successful participation is assessed by means of written tests during the course.

  • 5th semester: Animal nutrition (lecture course 2 SWS)

  • 5th semester: Exercises in animal nutrition (group lessons, 2 SWS). This course is subject to compulsory attendance, i.e. proof of regular and successful participation must be provided. Successful participation is assessed by means of written tests during the course.

  • 5th semester (end): Oral examination in animal nutrition as part of the first section of the veterinary examination. Necessary proof is the passing of the preliminary veterinary examination as well as regular and successful participation in the exercises in feed science and in the exercises in animal nutrition.

  • 7th semester: Offer of 3 to 4 elective subjects

The lecturers provide accompanying materials such as lecture handouts or access to selected multimedia media to prepare for and follow up on the lecture content. This content can be accessed via the "Blackboard" learning platform of Freie Universität Berlin.

An oral examination in animal nutrition as part of the first section of the veterinary examination usually takes place at the end of the 5th semester. Necessary proof is the successful completion of the veterinary preliminary examination as well as regular and successful participation in the exercises in feed science and in the exercises in animal nutrition. For organizational information, please refer to the Blackboard of the FU Berlin. There you will also find e-learning resources, teaching projects and other information such as general literature.

We offer elective internships as part of the large curative internship. This involves working on practical topics in animal nutrition. During the internship, students work with an experienced team to gain a practical insight into animal nutrition research. If you are interested, please contact Prof. Dr. Jürgen Zentek.

Theoretical student training in accordance with the Ordinance on the Licensing of Veterinarians (TAppV) is also possible for all pregnant or breastfeeding students and immunosuppressed persons in animal nutrition without restriction or loss of time.

Depending on the topic, practical training (internships/laboratory work) is subject to restrictions resulting from occupational health and safety laws. If necessary, an individual solution will be sought after consultation with all parties involved and risk assessment by the attending physician. Those affected should contact the office or a lecturer of their choice as soon as possible. A discreet / confidential handling of the respective situation is a matter of course, please contact us as early as possible so that we can find a safe and efficient solution for you!

Not all animal nutrition rooms are barrier-free.
