Welcome to the Institute of Veterinary Anatomy!

Would you like to gain an insight into the animal kingdom? The Institute of Veterinary Anatomy is the right place to do just that, since we do not only ‘vet’ various species of domesticated animals, but also birds and reptiles, including all organs and tissues. Teaching at the institute comprises classes in anatomy, histology and embryology. It follows the development of animals from conception to complete tissue structures and organ systems, in terms of their form, position and structure – macroscopically as well as microscopically.

Anatomy is a crucial subject during the first two years of the degree course of veterinary medicine in addition to teaching students professional skills and methodological competencies in anatomy, we accompany them in developing personal and social competencies, in order to initiate the process of finding their identity as a veterinarian. To that end, classes that incorporate self-regulatory and communicative competencies are part of the elective courses offered

For an evidence-based implementation of teaching and learning concepts to develop these skills, our research focuses on veterinary didactics as well as the mental health of veterinary students and veterinarians. In addition, we conduct research on the development of in vitro models as replacement and supplementary methods for animal testing.

Would you like to acquire a skeleton or other anatomical specimen? Do you require professional assistance in the areas of histology, immunohistochemistry or electron microscopy? Please contact us, we are available to support you with these services.

Or pay us a visit. The institute houses an extensive anatomical teaching collection as well as the Gurlt and Ziegler collections as historical collections, which you are welcome to visit on request. We look forward to seeing you!
